Iron County School Board – Sensitive Materials Policy

Subjective Sensitive Material generally Relates to Pornographic or Indecent content.

House bill 374 implemented new state legislation that mandates all public school districts to develop a systematic process for reviewing library and classroom material. The exception would be curriculum textbooks.

Thirteen books were mandated by the state to be removed because they were deemed to be “Pornographic or Indecent.” Iron County pulled these books. Real Impact met with Tim Marriott from the district, and he explained how a parent, guardian, student, or employee of a school can challenge the appropriateness of a book.

1. Parents have access to a portal where they can view material in the library and see what their children are checking out.
2. Parents can also check out the book or media their child is viewing from that portal.
3. If a parent objects to a book or media that is available to their child, they are encouraged to contact their child’s school to challenge it. When challenging school media, the challenger is asked to read the entire book or watch the entire video as part of the challenging process.
4. If any book or media is challenged, a panel consisting of a school administrator, licensed teacher, librarian, district student services coordinator, or one or more parents will review the book or media.
5. Parents may also restrict their child’s access to specific books or media by submitting a written request.
